Alaska and British Columbia

Since I love Alaska and any opportunity to see whales, I decided to stay on the ship for a 7 day trip to Alaska and British Columbia. In Ketchikan it was a feast of Dungeness crabs. The fresh caught crabs were a delectable treat followed by crab cakes oozing with crab meat. We were the first ship of the season so it was a bit funny as the folks were just working out their tourist routines. By August, they would be fine oiled machines with the jokes all landing and the waterfalls locations known, but we didn’t mind as they practiced on us.

The itinerary for this trip was a bit different from the typical Alaskan cruise. Since I’ve done the basic trip several times it was a real treat to explore Prince Rupert British Columbia and Nanaimo.

A dance celebration from the First Nations peoples of British Columbia

In late April, I was shocked to find the Hummingbirds had already make it from South America to Prince Rupert British Columbia. Unfortunately the whales weren’t as speedy and were still migrating north, I didn’t see a single whale!

I couldn’t pass up the opportunity for High Tea at the Empress Hotel in Victoria. It was a beautiful day for indulgence.

Victoria has a special temperate climate and I was surprised to find the spring flowers in full bloom.

The 7 day trip to Alaska seemed impossibly short after the long trek across the Pacific but the weather was a miracle, no rain the entire time. Next stop the Via Rail train across Canada.
