The Taj Mahal

At sunset from the hotel rooftop

My first view of the Taj Mahal was from the hotel rooftop, and it nearly took my breath away. Here was this iconic image, and I had the privilege to be standing there. Frankly that image, was so powerful it might have been sufficient to check the “I’ve seen the Taj Mahal box” but the next day we got to go inside to see the skill and workmanship up close. It took 20,000 craftsman 22 years to complete and the marble is inlaid with delicate flowers. It is even more breathtaking up close. I went a bit crazy taking pictures but I promise to just share my favorites.

Morning light
The colors of India passing in front of the Taj
Evidence I was really there!

Our next stops are Lucknow and Varnassi. Varnassi is the sacred site where Hindu’s want to be cremated on the Ganges. I’m told it is a very unique and moving experience.

  2. Beautiful! I’ve dreamed about seeing that since I was in 2nd grade and had to do a report on it! Thanks for sharing! Safe travels!

  3. barb…I’m reliving Greg and my India trip through your reports…so many of the same thoughts. What really surprised me was my reaction to the Taj. We first saw it at sunrise from a place across the river. Stunned by the beauty. But when we walk through the small door to get inside the taj. Grounds and saw it full on I started crying…a reaction I never expected! Kathie
