Null Island – The Prime Meridian

The Elusive Null Island Achieved!

I’ve crossed the Equator several times but this was the first time I got to the Prime Meridian at 0’ Latitude and 0’ Longitude. The ship hovered at the 0’ 0’ for a bit and we greeted King Neptune in an elaborate ceremony. As a mariner, studying navigation this was a very memorable experience.

A wonderful Arts teacher from the Ivory Coast

The Ivory Coast is one of those places that chokes you with history, filled with human trafficking, civil war and bribery. As I sat in the comfortable air conditioned bus the have and have nots were distinct. We were driving as school let out and the streets were filled with perfectly clean and uniformed children with bright white shirts going home to shacks with cardboard walls and tin roofs. It was one of those days I was happy to experience, but so glad to get back to the clean, safe ship.

Today is Gambia, tomorrow Senegal, then finally Cape Verde before we head back across the Atlantic to Puerto Rico. Weather has been amazingly mild with extremely calm seas and I’m hoping it holds for the crossing.

  1. Very interesting! I remember learning about the prime meridian in school but you’re the first person I know who’s been there!
